Taming the Algorithm – The Power and Limits of Computational Culture
Over 120 guests joined us at the Nagarro Hive in Vienna to explore the intersections of art, technology, and society under the theme “Taming the Algorithm – The Power and Limits of Computational Culture.”
At the heart of the event was the vernissage of media artist Stephanie Meisl, whose works uncover the biases, logic, and unexpected poetry of AI systems. The evening opened with a keynote by AI governance expert Jeannette Gorzala (ACT AI NOW), offering an insightful take on the EU AI Act and the challenges of responsible AI use.
A moderated panel discussion followed, where Stephanie Meisl, Jeannette Gorzala, and Peter Ahnert (AI & Data Lead Europe at Nagarro) explored how artificial intelligence shapes creative processes, decision-making, and our understanding of responsibility in a machine-driven world.
It was an inspiring evening filled with inspiring conversations, powerful art, and fresh perspectives on AI – rounded off by chill live music, culinary highlights, and a warm, open atmosphere.
The exhibition
In an age where algorithms silently shape our realities - curating our desires, predicting our behaviors, and framing our digital existence - Taming the Algorithm interrogates, deconstructs, and reimagines these invisible forces through the work of media artist Stephanie Meisl.
This exhibition is not only a showcase of Stephanie Meisl's work, but also an in-depth exploration of her artistic process, where AI, automation, and machine learning are not just tools, but subjects of critique and reflection. Her works explore the biases, absurdities and unintended poetics of algorithmic systems, revealing the often unseen ways in which technology interprets, distorts and co-authors our realities.
Stephanie Meisl's work navigates the complex intersections of machine logic and human intuition, exploring how algorithms define, manipulate, and sometimes fundamentally subvert our perceptions of truth, identity, and agency. Through installations, AI-generated imagery, text-based interventions, interactive works, performances and stories, her art invites viewers to critically engage with the systems that silently govern modern life.
Key themes:
