At Nagarro, we're dedicated to staying ahead and connected in the ever-evolving landscape of technology. That's why, when the first AWS Community Day was held in Spain in September 2023, we were excited to have our AWS experts, led by our Head of Cloud Operations, Bartomeu Miró, represent us to share our vision and showcase our work in this domain.

About AWS Community Day

AWS Community Day events are community-led conferences where event logistics and content are planned, sourced, and delivered by community leaders. They feature technical discussions, workshops, and hands-on labs led by expert AWS users and industry leaders from around the world.

We used this event to connect with industry peers by exchanging ideas and insights on cloud architecture, security, and on digital engineering. These connections will enrich our knowledge base and expand our professional network. By engaging with the broader cloud community, we ensure we're always in sync with the latest trends and technologies. Our participation helps shape the future of cloud computing and fosters a culture of innovation (an integral part of our core, CARING values at Nagarro) within the company.

Sharing Success: The Barcelona City Council Case Study

As part of discussing Nagarro’s work, Bartomeu also delivered a talk highlighting a notable success story of one of our clients - Barcelona’s City Council. This project showcases how Nagarro leveraged AWS cloud to overcome the client’s challenges and achieve remarkable results. Here’s a quick glimpse of the project:

About the project

The flexibility and scalability of AWS has attracted and sustained Barcelona City Council's public web platform at critical moments in recent years, transforming the day-to-day running of SREs into a pleasant routine. In 2014, the public web area of the Ajuntament de Barcelona started the transition to AWS that was completed in 2023. It now hosts hundreds of applications.

During this period, the platform has grown, evolved, and undergone re-structuring to withstand political turmoil, an attack, the COVID pandemic, and other city events such as the annual festivities of La Mercè. We’ve often broken traffic records on the platform.

The challenge

Barcelona's public web platform needed to be flexible and scalable to handle critical moments, from political events to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The solution

Nagarro migrated the platform to AWS in 2014. The result is a robust system that now hosts hundreds of applications. These include:

Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Declarative tools provided efficient work allocation and version control for all changes and operations.

  • Automation: Streamlined problem-solving, improved scalability and minimized errors through automation.
  • AWS Services: We implemented a robust architecture that utilized various AWS services to meet the city's evolving needs.

At a glance

At Nagarro, more than anything else, we believe in letting our work speak for itself. Here's a quick look at the impact of our performance, in numbers:

Key numbers related to our cloud solution in Barcelona’s City Council infrastructure:

200K
requests per minute
300+
domains hosted
1000+
environments deployed
300+
developers catered
1000
support requests per year

The results

The platform has withstood various challenges and regularly breaks traffic records. Nagarro ensured IaaS provisioning services of web hosting and backups, and their technical support for the client. We used declarative tools to manage the Infrastructure as Code (IaC), enabling us to leverage work efforts as well as keep all changes and operations under version control. Additionally, our steadfast commitment to automation not only expedites incident resolution but also drives scalability, cost control, and error reduction.

Our talk also used recent events in Barcelona to talk about web platform architecture, migrations, AWS services and show the behind-the-scenes work, exemplifying our achievements across both day-to-day and significant moments.

Looking ahead

Our memorable experience at AWS Community Day in Spain has reaffirmed our commitment to excellence, innovation, and continuous learning. We’re excited to leverage these insights to drive positive change and deliver even greater value to our clients and partners in the future. Not surprisingly, we are already looking forward to be there at the next AWS Days event in the coming year(s)!
