Our client’s legacy quality management system had limited features and wasn't scalable. The system also lacked data analytics capabilities. This led to difficulty in providing seamless access to production data and decision support to quality engineers and shop-floor operators. As a result, this hindered the ability of quality engineers and shop floor workers to monitor shop floor operations and take timely corrective actions. Thus, there was a need for a new quality management system to enable more transparency in shop floor operations and easy accessibility of shop-floor quality data.

We developed a quality management application using the MindSphere industrial IoT platform. The solution is integrated with the client’s quality management systems and allows users to visualize near real-time data points with an intuitive user interface. The solution enables visualization of real-time statistical process control metrics such as Cp, Cpk, Sigma, and many more. The solution auto-refreshes report per minute to accommodate new data points. The application is enabled with a search and selection feature to view quality management reports based on product, part, and variant hierarchy.

Our solution enables transparency of information between quality engineers and the shop-floor team to enhance the responsiveness of quality engineers in taking corrective action in case of any quality deviation. The solution improved quality management on the shop floor and reduced defects and production waste. The solution also led to optimum utilization of the client’s quality management system by enabling access to quality data on quality management reporting applications in near-real-time.
