Modernizing cities with sustainable mobility using Assisted Reality

An Assisted Reality solution using Smart Glasses for the visually impaired to access safe and sustainable transport systems and ensure smooth navigation.

Upstream Mobility ensures the expansion and management of its own digital infrastructures, expands digital services, and acts as a central integrator and contact for connected urban transportation. Their goal is to ensure mobility for everyone in all areas of life. To achieve this vision, they develop the digital infrastructure for tomorrows’ non-discriminatory transport system and offer it to cities and commercial suppliers worldwide. But they realized safe and sustainable mobility was a challenge for the visually impaired who have no access to the usual visual navigation aids. To solve this problem, Upstream Mobility and Nagarro joined forces to build an indoor navigation solution for travelers in public spaces and set out to ensure safe and sustainable mobility for everyone. Together, we built a solution that promotes freedom of movement and security in public spaces. In fact, the solution has been recently awarded at the eAward 2021 and recognized for how it brings about a real inclusivity among communities

challenge

Anyone who has ever been forced to find their way around a big city and a dense transport network knows how difficult it can be to find your way. Now, imagine how challenging it must be for someone who is visually impaired and has no access to the usual visual navigation aids. There was a lack of safe and sustainable transport systems for everyone, particularly for the visually impaired and specially-abled individuals.

solution

Nagarro experts evaluated digital assistants like Smart Glasses as a suitable technology for the masses that can serve a great purpose, especially as an orientation aid for the visually disabled. During the pilot project, we used Smart Glass technology powered by Low Energy Beacons for indoor positioning and navigation to build a smart solution for safe mobility. The solution uses a CMS that enables useful features like POIs, audio cues, heads-up information, and weather forecasts, and other important insights.

With the use of modern tech like Smart Glasses, we help contribute to building more inclusive communities and cities. By building a highly accessible solution for everyone to access public transport and infrastructure, Nagarro has helped build safe and sustainable cities and ensure seamless mobility for everyone.

The modernization of existing offers of public transport operators and the access to safe and sustainable transport systems is a central concern for us. Therefore, it was important for us to test the use of smart glasses for indoor navigation in a pilot project. Nagarro proved to be the ideal partner due to its experience in the field and the project has provided us with important insights for the future!
